nurse is responsible for assisting other health care professionals in the treatment of the ill or injured.

Work place setting:
Nurses can work in a variety of settings such as, emergency rooms, hospitals, nursing home and doctors offices.

Nurses can also assist in research programs and non-clinical trials. They also deal with issues of quality of life and death and dying.

Degrees offered:
Associate in Nursing: two year program
Bachelor of Nursing: four year program
Master of Nursing: two years of graduate school

 
Specialties:

Mental health nurses :Works in psychiatric and mental health facilities.

Disability nurse: Working with people that have learning or developmental disabilities.

Pediatric nurses: A nurse that works with infants, children and adolescences.
Geriatric nurse:  Works with the elderly.
Home health nurse: Work with all ages in their homes.
 
Each of the medical specialties have nurses that are specialized in that area:

Cardiac nursing
Orthopedic nursing
Oncology nursing
Pulmonary nursing
Internal medicine nursing
 
Things to think about:
There are many different working environments and settings that a nurse might work in. Each environment has its own unique scheduled hours and work days. For example, If you work in a hospital you might have to work weekends and holidays compared to a Doctor's office where you would have Monday-Friday work hours with most holidays off. Usually most people have an idea of the specialties they would like to work in however this might change when start your internships.
